Market research firm and Escalate PR client IDC was recently featured in an Associated Press article tackling a hot topic in AI: energy efficiency.

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek claims to have trained its flagship chatbot at a fraction of the cost of U.S. tech giants, fueling speculation about AI’s actual energy demands. Could this mean a slowdown in the relentless growth of data center energy consumption? Rick Villars of IDC says otherwise.

Villars argues that increased AI efficiency doesn’t necessarily mean less energy use – it could, in fact, supercharge AI adoption across industries, making computing power more essential than ever.

We think this actually could boost and accelerate the time frame for when AI becomes much more embedded into our lives, in the work sense, the living sense, and in health care,” Villars explains. “So we still think the capacity is required.

With AI pushing deeper into our daily lives, IDC’s insights highlight the critical need for businesses and policymakers to rethink AI infrastructure strategies.
