Mother’s Day at Escalate: Where Flexibility Isn’t a Perk – It’s the Point

A few years ago, the headlines told a clear story: working moms were being pushed to the brink. Burnout, inflexible hours, the impossible task of juggling it all—one in three considered downshifting their careers, or leaving entirely.
Here’s what’s changed since then: not enough.
While remote work has gained ground (about 26% of U.S. households have someone working remotely at least once a week), a lot of companies still expect employees to show up everywhere, all the time, with no margin for real life. But at Escalate PR, we’ve never done business as usual.
From the very beginning, we built this agency with intention: no offices, no clock-watching, no pressure to hide the fact that you’re a whole human with a family, a life, and maybe a toddler screaming during your Zoom call. We built Escalate for people who know what they’re doing – and need the freedom to do it on their own terms.
That’s why 76% of our team are parents, and 61% are moms. And they’re not just getting by; they’re leading, mentoring, and shaping the future of PR. Because when you create a culture that works for moms, you create a culture that works for everyone.
We asked a few of them to share how motherhood has shaped their careers:
Jennifer Jewett, Senior Vice President, Scottsdale
“I often say babysitting and more recently, motherhood, has really helped me hone my communication skills. If you can convince a 3-year-old to go to bed and a 7-year-old to do homework first thing in the morning, you can communicate effectively with just about anyone.”
Laura Collins, Senior Consultant, Scottsdale
“The key to successful storytelling is understanding your audience and getting the timing just right. Motherhood has helped me listen more closely, craft better stories, and have greater impact than ever before. I’ve learned to put on my oxygen mask first—I take the time to process information before reacting.”
Lauren McNamara, Senior Vice President, Germany
“We all navigate diverse roles beyond our careers, and these deserve recognition and support. As a mother and military spouse, life can be unpredictable. Yet, the invaluable lessons from these roles have no doubt made me a stronger, more confident communications professional. By celebrating the lives each of its employees has outside of work, Escalate has created a unique culture of trust and empowerment.”
